Godparents helping children get ahead
Godparents are increasingly choosing to help their godchildren financially, rather than with traditional christening gifts such as silver spoons, claims a new survey.
According to National Savings and Investments (NS&I), godparents spend £2 billion a year on their young charges, investing around £350 million of this in savings for their futures.
Around one in five godparents said they would prefer to give godchildren a start towards their 'nest egg' at birth, with another 17 per cent wanting to help them financially later in life.
Karen Jones, marketing director at NS&I commented: 'Being a godparent is a position of responsibility and presents an ideal opportunity to give a helping hand to future generations.
'Almost one in five godparents are choosing to give financial products or savings as gifts to introduce and encourage good savings habits.'
The survey also named Jamie and Jools Oliver as the celebrity couple that most parents would choose as godparents to their children. |
