Millions face losing their licence
Over a million motorists are on the brink of accumilating 12 points on their licence and face a ban. The number of motorists facing a ban has risen by 4 per cent in the past year. A study by Direct Line shows that 16 per cent of the UK's 33 million drivers have speeding offences. There are now more than 6,000 fixed and mobile speed cameras and in 2005 they flashed 2.2 million motorists compared with 262,000 in 1996.
The minimum punishment is £60 fine and three penalty points, if motorists exceed the speed limit by a large margin, they could be summoned to court be given a £2,500 fine, 6 points and face a ban. In the past 3 years, drivers have been fined more than £300million in speeding fines. Almost half the motorists caught speeding have been caught exceeding the limit by less than 10 per cent. |
