One in five are victims of fraud
A recent study has claimed that due to the alarming statistics of card fraud, more consumers are choosing to use their cash instead. The study suggested that the original statistics may have been alarmingly underestimated. Banks have managed to curb the amount of card fraud carried out successfuly but the introduction of the chip and PIN system has not completely beaten the criminals and they are finding ways to beat the system.
The study was financed by the European Security Transport Association who are concerned with Brussels enthusiasm for card purchases versus cash. The British currently use more debit and credit cards for purchases than anywhere else and so far around 24 per cent or seven million of us have fallen victim to card fraud. Since the new chip and PIN system came in to force, the instances of high street card fraud has fallen by almost half. Criminals are now targeting the actual machines themselves. |
