Property, cigarettes and beer to rise by 50%

The cost of cigarettes, beer and housing is forecast to double by 2025 says a new report by Mint.

When we are all 20 years older, the average cost of buying a house will rise from today's price of £163,334 to £335,674 says the internet bank.

Beer swillers are looking at a 2025 tipple costing them £4, and if they want cigarettes to accompany their pint, this will cost them an extra £8.50 for a packet of 20.

However, though staple foods are also expected to increase in price with inflation, they will not go up at the same rate as the likes of housing.

Purchasing a loaf of bread is expected to set shoppers back by 99 pence, instead of the 50 pence we pay today and a pint of milk is set to rise by 11 pence to 48 pence.

Mint's Jerry Toher said: 'Family life will look very different in 2025. What we consider to be a typical household today will be hugely different in two decades time. So too will the regulation of the domestic purse-strings.

'Single households will increase and the average age of the nation will rise. Naturally, this combination of factors will have a huge impact on UK expenditure.'

The bank added that demand for services such as private healthcare and insurance will also increase.
