Summary boxes lacking on credit card statements

Most credit card companies do not include summary boxes of their loan rates on card statements, finds a new report.

This is in spite of two in three people thinking the inclusion is a good idea, finds Halifax credit cards. Currently only Halifax, Nationwide, egg and Barclays print the information on statements.

Critics say that customers cannot properly compare rates and services offered by credit card companies unless they have this information.

"Customers need to be aware of the rates and charges applicable to their particular credit card. Summary boxes make this possible," said Ian Corfield, head of Halifax Card Services.

Companies claim that technological issues stop them from introducing the summaries until 2006, though some experts say that consumers shouldn’t have to wait that long.

"We do not believe consumers should have to wait until the middle of 2006 for the summary box to be introduced on monthly statements in a consistent manner across all of the industry," said The Treasury Select Committee.

Credit card users can normally find information about rates on marketing literature.
