Mobile phone calls from abroad could become much cheaper
Due to fierce political and industry opposition to plans put down by Brussels, mobile phone operators will not be forced to slash the cost if calling home from abroad. The original plan was to include a call for mobile phone operators such as Orange to stop charging its customers when they receive calls from home when they are abroad, instead the charge will be capped at 11 pence per minute, it will cost no more than 32 pence per minute to call home from abroad and the cost of making local calls abroad will be capped at 22 pence per minute.
The proposals will now need to be approved by the majority of EU member governments and the European Parliament.
There are some figures that suggest that calls from abroad or roaming calls, account for almost 20 per cent of an operator's revenue with a total fee amount of £5billion a year from Europe's 147 million mobile phone users. For UK customers the calls made from abroad can be up to 50 times more expensive than for a national call. |
