Regions vary over Mother's Day gifts
If the trends of recent years have been upheld, yesterday's Mother's Day celebrations will have seen wide regional variations in the levels of generosity across the nation.
Findings released from a study of credit and debit card spending by Barclaycard Business for 2005 show that traditionally frugal Scotland topped the bill for spending on flowers, with an average transaction cost of £33.
This was despite Edinburgh falling at the bottom of the table, with an average flower spend of just £13, while it was a town much further south which proved the most lavish, with Uxbridge in Middlesex registering a typical buy of £53 on floral gifts.
A study of the figures for restaurant spending casts a different light on the matter, with Belfast and the Isle of Man heading the table, thanks to average transactions of £53 and £52 respectively.
Here, Scotland claimed the wooden spoon, with an average transactional value of just £28 in local restaurants.
The largest single transaction from both categories on last year's Mother's Day was for £475 in a restaurant in Sheffield. |
