Women have double spending power today than yesteryear
Women today have 50 per cent extra income to spend than women 20 years ago says new research.
A study by Marks & Spencer Money into women's spending habits though time, found that the wage gap between men and women has closed from 35 per cent then, to 27 per cent now.
What women spend their money on has also changed over the years.
A typical woman's shopping list back in the 1980's included basic food for family cooking, shared use of a family car, one holiday a year and items for the baby she had in her late 20's.
Today's 21st century woman spends her money on several holiday's a year, including long-haul destinations, her own car, meals out, luxury 'me' items such as spa days, and designer clothes for the baby she has in her 30's.
'Our Female Price Index shows a nation of women increasingly free to treat and reward themselves,' said David MacKay, commercial director of M&S Money.
He added that women 'have greater influence than ever before over household finances, with a third of today's women being wholly financially independent.' |
