Pet owners open to legal action

Pet owners are unaware that they can be sued if their pet causes another person injury, finds a new report.

Up to 500,000 dog owners, the equivalent of 83 per cent, do not have pet insurance that would cover them against legal action in the event of an accident.

With 45 per cent of the survey saying they would not hesitate to sue for damages if a dog did them damage, it seems this is a growing concern, reveals More Than.

David Pitt, head of insurance at More Than, explains that unlike cats who are seen as free spirits, dogs are the owners legal responsibility.

"A court could decide the owner is responsible if their dog causes any accident or injury - ranging from a car accident to biting the postman," he commented.

Pet owners could face an average of £500 in damages and £450 in vets bills as a result of an altercation involving their dog.
