Online credit card fraud warning

Internet shoppers are facing a greater risk of credit card fraud, a new report finds.

Recently introduced chip and pin technology has reduced card fraud on the high street, but the improved security measures could be forcing fraudsters online, according to research carried out by Retail Decisions.

"As chip and pin reduces card fraud on the high street and online sales continue to grow, the risk of credit card fraud for people who shop regularly on the internet will also increase," said Lisa Harris, spokesperson for Saga Telephone Service.

To help prevent fraud, consumers can follow this advice to limit exposure to online credit card fraud.

Consumers should think about the way that they use their computers. This includes logging off when it is not in use (which limits online visibility) making users less of a target and deleting any unrecognised internet connections in the dial-up folder.

Anti-virus software, upgrades and patches can also help stop attempts by hackers to access banking details, while free online software can remove installed viruses.

Consumers should never reply to an unsolicited email asking for bank details - no matter how legitimate it looks.

They are advised to always call the bank first and check with them as it is unlikely that a reputable bank would ever ask for bank details over the internet.
