UK motorists could be collectively paying £663 million more than they need to on breakdown cover, a new report has found.

The old adage of shopping around to find the best quote was reinforced by Tesco Personal Finance, who said that by switching from major brands, customers could cut the cost of their cover by up to 50 per cent.

Tesco added that companies like the AA and RAC charge almost twice as much as the cheapest policies on the market, yet 8.2 million motorists still continue to purchase cover from them.

Allan Burns, head of car breakdown cover at Tesco Personal Finance said: "This is a highly competitive market. Most drivers look for the best combination of quality and cost from their car insurance provider, and they should expect exactly the same from their car breakdown cover.

"Customers should look for a great price as well as quality of service, and it is readily available. The traditional players in the market place are not the only providers to offer both. By shopping around consumers will see they now have far greater choice of quality and value," he advised.
